St Jerome's 2nd Lineup Announcement

Laneway Festival Second Announcement

Here at Laneway Festival HQ we have been overwhelmed by the response to the first announcement of acts playing at the 2010 St Jerome's Laneway Festival. Tickets are selling faster than ever before, with the Sydney event now sold out and the others not far behind.

In case you need a bit more encouragement, we're pleased to announce a second round of acts that we think make up some of the best new emerging talent in Australia.

At he beginning of January we’ll be making our final announcement of acts; the winners of THE VERY WEST initiative and triplejunearthed.com's Laneway competition plus one more special international act, so stay tuned.

Don’t forget you can follow us on Twitter and Facebook or join the Laneway Festival forum.

VARIOUS CITIES

It seems incredible that a band that has achieved so much - from tours with Wilco, Cold War Kids, The Drones to a coveted appearance at New York's ATP Festival (and many others), the release of an accomplished and critically lauded EP - has only just set free their debut album. With The Last Dance, Sydney's BRIDEZILLA have realised their promise and released an album of startling maturity. We’re thrilled to welcome them back to the Laneway fold. If 2009 has belonged to any artist, it belonged to PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY. It was hard to ignore them as they kickstarted the year at the Sydney leg of the Laneway Festival, bagged a couple of songs on the Underbelly soundtrack, released a tidy EP, and then a triple j Feature Album debut Hope is For Hopers. With bucketloads of guileless charm and perfectly formed pop songs, we welcome the PHILLY JAYS back to Laneway in 2010. [Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney]

Alexander Gow and Thomas Savage are the duo at the heart of OH MERCY. Their successful debut album Privileged Woes shows their evocative, intelligent lyricism and strong pop sensibility. Recorded in their spare bedroom by Miles Wootton of The Panics, Privileged Woes is a strong follow up to their applauded debut EP In The Nude For Love. 2009 saw them break through the consciousness of Australia's indie landscape, with tours with the likes of Ben Folds, Ben Kweller, and Kaiser Chiefs as well as taking home the Qantas Spirit Of Youth Music Award. BRISBANE

Brisbane upstarts, LAST DINOSAURS, produce catchy pop tunes with a unique blend of tropical beats and ambient guitar riffs. For a band so young they’ve managed to accomplish a whole damn lot. They’ve toured Japan, shared the stage with Matt & Kim (Canada) plus Aussie faves like Bluejuice, Red Riders, Lost Valentinos and Yves Klein Blue. With a debut release due out on Dew Process early next year LAST DINOSAURS promise big things. [Brisbane only]

MELBOURNE

Cracked pop fuzzbox MARK BARRAGE makes a nervy sound tonic, equal parts pop music EQd to breaking point and midnight crucifix synth-kraut. Three years in the making, Delays by Mark Barrage finds the dissonant electronic songster shift from the overtly lyrical, heartbreak-obsessed territory of his debut into realms of hard sound, dance timings, band-ish arrangements and bleary-eyed nighttime sensation [Melbourne only]

PANEL OF JUDGES (or Panel as they are affectionately known) are Dion Nania, Alison Bolger and Paul Williams, a trio who have blazed a quietly confident trail through the international pop underground since their inception in the late 1990s. The supremely-named recent release Bad Vibrations is the modest masterpiece of their 10 year career. Bad Vibrations crystallises everything that is great about these beloved bastions of the Melbourne underground: restless imagination, lazily catchy melodies, epic rhythms, and heavenly riffs [Melbourne only].

TEETH & TONGUE is the ever-evolving project of Jessica Cornelius. Following the 2008 release of the locally-lauded Monobasic, a melting pot of pop, garage and post-punk with metronomic precision and haunting vocals, Jess put a band featuring some of Melbourne's finest and toured with the likes of Mountain Goats (US), Bachelorette (NZ), Jen Cloher and Philadelphia Grand Jury. The triple j Next Crop artist is set to release her much anticipated sophomore album in early 2010 [Melbourne only].

SYDNEY

Relative newcomers DANIMALS favour reverb-soaked, summery vocals, layered and looped over and over, with strong groove rhythms and playful accents of quirky R&B pop. Nuanced, developed production is a hallmark of the quintet's utterly charming music. Featuring three of Sydney's most exciting young drummers, plus the extraordinary talents and vision of frontman Jonti Danilewitz, DANIMALS are worth keeping an eye on in 2010. [Sydney only]

Already making his way on to next year's Ones to Watch lists, JONATHAN BOULET made his way onto the airwaves and into the hearts of indie music-lovers across with country via ' A Community Service Announcement', a tropical folk-pop treasure that transports you right to the middle of summer without even trying. Remarkably, the multi-instrumentalist wrote, recorded and produced his whole debut album himself. [Sydney only]

Since independently releasing their debut album The Sound of Trees Falling on People in December 08’, SEEKAE instantly impressed audiences and sold out their initial pressing. Their live show, which incorporates drum machines, synths, samplers, melodicas, guitars, drums, glockenspiels and spoons, has been described as somewhere between ambient, glitch and hip hop. 2009 has seen Seekae become the first recipients of Australia Council for the Art’s Soundclash grant, nominated for a Qantas SOYA as well as playing alongside Decoder Ring, Midnight Juggernauts, as well as an appearance at Parklife. ADELAIDE

Ok Adelaide, while it’s not always possible to make everybody’s festival dreams come true (i.e. please don’t start requesting elephant rides!) we are happy to confirm that MUMFORD & SONSare coming to your town. The London-based scribes of 'Little Lion Man' and 'Sigh No More' have set hearts aflutter with their noir-folk and we're pleased they can now make it to the City of Churches [All cities].

THE SWISS look to set to be the breakthrough Adelaide band of 2010, if their recent shows with Ladyhawke are anything to go by. The trio’s forthcoming Bubble Bath EP (due out in January on Modular Recordings) is testament to what lies at the core lifestyle of The Swiss: crisp and snappy drums, quicksand lazer-sludge bass, dizzy pops and flourishes, melody rays and synthesised strings that glide on the thermal currents of life. The Swiss have a lot to live up to when hitting the stage; they deliver every time with a searingly hot, high energy, dynamic live show [Adelaide only].

PERTH

Synth pop rockers BOYS BOYS BOYS! have earned quite a reputation for themselves in the last 12 months. With their debut album YES hot off the press the band have been winning audiences over with a combination of onstage antics, catchy pop riffs, sugary all-girl vocal harmonies, and ‘80s electronica. Paisley Adams, Jay Watson and Joseph Orion started POND with the intention of inventing their fantasy band and album. With an ever-changing membership that flows around the original trio, POND’S live show is constantly expanding and contractive with an assortment of Perth musicians (Tame Impala, Mink, Mussel Creek). Between playing shows in Perth, Melbourne, New Zealand and Japan, the musical collective have managed to record three albums with their most recent LP Frond set to be released next year on Badminton Bandit & Hole In The Sky. Acclaimed as the next golden music export straight outta Perth, KILL TEEN ANGST have earned their mantle as one of the finest purveyors of alt rock’n’roll in the country. In 2007 KTA won the WAMI for Rock Song of the Year with their anthemic track The World Or Nothing, which was released on their acclaimed self-titled debut EP. Over the last 12 months Kill Teen Angst delivered the incendiary live performances that their debut release foretold. Now, with the release of their new single Gen Y, Kill Teen Angst are hitting Laneway [Perth only].www.myspace.com/killteenangst

TOMAS FORD lives two lives – synth-disco auteur and one man punk rock maelstrom. In a cluttered hallway-sized studio in his Fremantle home, he spends his nights crafting hyperanalytical pop songs and irreverent dancefloor remixes. By day, he collaborates with his mother on gaudy neon costumes, blogging feverishly and designing his own distinctive poster and cover art. Tomás Ford emerges from his studio cocoon for Laneway with a highly theatrical show full of new costumes and live video, alongside his electro songwriting and trademark insane showmanship [Perth only].

There is one group from WA seriously set to explode from the underground…and that’s duo TIM AND JEAN. These teenagers have just returned from the US where every label under the sun is trying to sign them. But this is not about business – it’s about the music. And it’s music they excel at. After bumping into each other at local gigs, it was at a train station that the duo finally decided to try and pen some tunes together. The results were a mind-boggling blend of synth pop and indie rock. They popped the results on MySpace and the virtual world went nuts. With only a handful of gigs to their name but an arsenal of unforgettable licks, Tim and Jean are destined for glory [Perth only].

VOLTAIRE TWINS make dangerous dance floor music and a unique brand of dark art-pop. Made up of actual twins Jaymes and Tegan, they wind crooning sweet melodies over banging beats which create a frenzied, power packed show that has garnered them plenty of attention in their native Perth. With support of live drummer Jye Satti they’ve played with Ladytron, Maximo Park and Walter Meego, as well as winning the Triple J Unearthed Parklife competition in 2009. Their debut EP is set for release in early 2010 and their first single D.I.L is already making waves on Australian radio. [Perth only]
