Root Supposed He Was Out Of the Question
(Meek Joe)
7/10
The remnants of the mighty TISM are back with an all new, all-caps moniker, and country/hip-hop double concept album. As usual, they are taking the piss out of absolutely everything, including themselves, you, and iPods - take that Apple! Cowboy scarves are in lieu of balaclavas and the music is earnest in a way that TISM never was, but the wit remains. DC ROOT is truly one of the last angry men and an articulate, ironic and misanthropic poet. Listening to a ROOT! album is such a bombardment of information it's almost enough to induce seizure (though not nearly on the Girl Talk level of seizurage). The band take a scattershot approach to humour, everything is fair game. The genres fly by almost as quickly as the targets for lyrical destruction. During 'My Cowboy Hat Is Bigger Than Texas' you will hear a hair-metal power ballad followed by a good minute of droning psychedelic freak-out. And while it may not strictly be a country/hip-hop double concept album, the two genres make an inspired union on ‘I still call Australia HO!’ (SB)
