Gig: The Fray @ The Tivoli 21/3/2009

For a band that disappeared from the music scene for quite a while, you would expect The Fray to draw just a small bunch to The Tivoli on a fine Saturday night. Arriving at the venue however, it was (pleasantly) surprising to see a crowd of at least 300 lining the streets of Fortitude Valley, awaiting the opening of doors.

Support for the night was delivered in the form of two acts; firstly an acoustic set by Holly Lovell, whose time management skills were lacking and, as a result only performed four songs to an eager crowd. Second to perform was Secondhand Serenade, a band that played well, but disappointingly only gained an audience response when they played their single Fall For You.

After what seemed like an eternity of support acts, the lights dimmed, the crowd turned silent, and there, silhouetted by flood lights was The Fray. Opening with a lesser known song from their album, How To Save A Life, the set got progressively better, climaxing when the band ceased playing, allowing the crowd to finish the last verse and chorus of How To Save A Life. After whipping out a few more tracks including a cover of Kanye West’s Heartless and a mash up of Look After You and Oasis’ Wonderwall, the night drew to a close with a performance of You Found Me.  It was obvious from the first song of the night that The Fray are an extremely tight live band and that they carry themselves tremendously well onstage, performing their entire set flawlessly with only minor technical difficulties detracting.
