Gig: Juana Molina, McCisko @ The Powerhouse 29/1/2009

The Powerhouse in its theatre format is perfect for intimate shows, although at times the intimacy can be stifling, particularly for small shows. McCisko’s set was almost excruciatingly loaded with nervous energy as the semi-duo gently unfolded their delicate tracks. A beautiful voice can only take you so far though and by the end of the set the lack of variety in song structure had become a bit of an issue. Not so much of a warm-up as a chill out act (particularly with the super powered air-con in the Powerhouse).
Juana Molina’s background in comedy was useful as she made light of the technical issues that delayed the start of her set for half an hour. Her impromptu Spanish lesson was well received but the wait certainly took its toll on the energy of the gig. Once the show got underway – and despite the continuing technical glitches – Molina’s skilful use of her elaborate looping rig to construct her ethereal and hypnotic tracks was gripping. For a stage show that consisted of a single woman onstage against a black curtain it was remarkably engaging, with all eyes glued to Molina as she deftly conjured her songs, crafting them swiftly and adroitly. There was plenty of material from her latest album ‘Un Dia’ but also some good use of her back catalogue. Unfortunately for Molina the lengthy delay in her start time meant plenty of the crowd scurried out before the encore (school night and all). Technological problems aside Molina is certainly one of the most esoteric shows you’re likely to see, without being self indulgent – a class act (The Professor).
