2010 BIG DAY OUT’S MUCKAMUCKS PRESENT
AN AUDIO AND VISUAL FEAST
Big Day Out is proud to present an incredible mix of sideshow talent in 2010. Showcasing a collection of visual art including sculpture that comes to life, progressive street art, film, photography and the return of the Tesla Coils bigger than ever before. This year we will also feature two unique exhibitions THE AUDIENCE IS THE ART that YOU have helped to make a reality. The artists have focused both broadly and intently on the Big Day Out audience as their subject and inspiration. Stop off at MUCKAMUCKS for some sideshow sensations that you won’t see anywhere else!
THE AUDIENCE IS THE ART:
DOCUMENTS OF RHYTHM BY SIMON TERRILL (AUSTRALIA): Also, we present eleven large format photographic works by Simon Terrill that demonstrate the dynamic patterns and interactions of large crowds in large places. Entitled DOCUMENTS OF RHYTHM, this collection of images was captured on large, single frame films at the Big Day Out events in Sydney and Melbourne in 2007 & 2008. These pictures explore the dark matter of a crowd, its utopian ideal of liberation and its potential to temporarily dissolve barriers between people. Through long exposures, multiple exposures and the use of cherry pickers, lighting towers and stage scaffolds, Simon was able to witness the madness and pleasure of these ecstatic festivals and rites of passage. The swarming matter of this crowd, filled with blurs, screams and moments of complete joy is perhaps the ultimate social space. With a formal focus on colour groupings, pattern and rhythm and a deliberate framing that creates a field with no horizon, these images revel in that moment of mass abandonment to the electric space of the crowd. THE AUDIENCE IS THE ART:
RAPTURE (SILENT ANTHEM) 2009 BY ANGELICA MESITI (AUSTRALIA): Firstly, we present a captivating, moving image work by video, performance and installation artist Angelica Mesiti. Shot in Sydney at The Big Day Out in 2008, the soundless video titled RAPTURE (SILENT ANTHEM) uses slow motion footage to capture a spectrum of experiences. From shared public responses to private intimate moments in the midst of the crowd. Winner of the 58th annual Blake Prize, Mesiti conveys an incredibly powerful essence of human spirituality. From the simple starting point of documenting the audience at the front of stage, RAPTURE succeeds to overhaul the viewer’s own emotional state. (ALL SHOWS)

GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB [GRL] PERTH (AUSTRALIA): Represented by Steve Berrick and Jerrem Lynch, GRL PERTH promotes excellence in graffiti whilst openly developing and sharing street art techniques and technology. Jerrem and Steve will be touring to projection bomb the Big Day Out, and show you how - armed with a projector and a computer - anyone can make their mark on a massive scale. Have your name (tag) or artwork blasted up high for all to see. Dedicated to making and sharing lots of new ways to appreciate and create street art. Learn how you can do your own guerrilla street projections. GRL is a global network of individuals committed to providing street artists, graffiti writers and other individual voices the ways and means of having their presence heard in cities flooded with commercial advertising. The general idea is simple; use technology to change the way people think about graffiti. By creating open source technology and encouraging people to do it themselves, GRL sparks a new ways of thinking about graffiti. (ALL SHOWS)

CELESTIAL COILS BY CARLOS VAN CAMP (NEW ZEALAND): Carlos Van Camp returns to the Big Day Out with the CELESTIAL COILS. Having previously wowed BDO crowds with his Lightning Rider show (a single Tesla coil and a performer wearing a protective metal suit throwing the bolts around from his hands and head) and the Lords of Lightning show (two performers battle it out on the large twin phase coils). Carlos felt it was time to take on a new challenge and build something that was completely unique. ‘As the Big Day out is a music oriented event, I wanted to incorporate sound into our show’. The result is a pair of speakers, each 8 meters in diameter that uses a powerful display of sound modulated lightning bolts to produce an audio visual experience that moves to the beat and actually amplifies the sounds we feed into it. The CELESTIAL COILS are the largest Audio Modulated Tesla coils in the world! Enjoy watching the music! You will be amazed! (ALL SHOWS)

THE UNCANNY BY CLINT HURRELL (AUSTRALIA): THE UNCANNY is a sculptural spectacle suggestive of an archaeological wonder, come explore the mystery and speculate for yourself. A giant pelvis with two spines, THE UNCANNY is a surreal and thought provoking image, a mysterious, reflective, and monumental relic. Amidst a sideshow atmosphere these towering reflective bones are exhibited for crowds to wonder on the grand design. As the day progresses into night the bones begin to twist and spin, a ghostly egg appears, and coming to life in the mist, a sight you won’t forget, the spiralling vertebras forming a DNA strand that shoots two landmark beams of light endlessly upward. Uniting the glistering relics into an ethereal body, giant mirror hands hovering on either side of the pelvis radiate from the palms a powerful matrix of beams that reflects off the spines and defines a domain. Designed by renowned Australian spectacle artist Clint Hurrell. Now at the Big Day Out, after decades of experimental development into mass crowd installations, Clint has mastered the “temple state” and is free to be a warrior of the light. This monumental work of Spectacle Art is defiantly worth discovering. (Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne)
