BAT FOR LASHES
Two Suns
THE ECHO LABEL/EMI
8/10

Two Suns is perhaps the perfect follow up album for Bat For Lashes’ 2006 debut Fur And Gold, showcasing a set of more matured and collected songs. A loose concept album about dualities – chaos and balance, love and pain – this subject matter hangs heavy within the lyrics. Sounding like a more commercial-friendly version of Bjork mixed with PJ Harvey and Tori Amos, Two Suns is an intensely spiritual album that shows the obvious talent of frontwoman Natasha Khan. Opener Glass showcases Khan’s delicate and beautiful voice and piano driven Siren Song is graceful and poetic. The album does have a few faults though, with the gospel choir on Peace of Mind feeling a little over done and out of place. Pearl’s Dream is a real gem amongst the album, with light synths and electro beats, a mournful drawl and catchy chorus. Album closer The Big Sleep is minimalistic and exotic; a lone dissonant piano backing the twin vocals of Khan and Scott Walker. Overall a sophisticated album, which while not appealing to everyone, is certainly a success within itself. (Bianca Martin)
